One of the biggest questions that is always on a homeowner’s mind is

Am I adequately insured if something happens?

This is not a question of IF, but WHEN!

The biggest investment in most individuals’ lives is their home.

The following are two natural disasters which caused homeowners to lose everything.

Most destructive (in terms of buildings destroyed) wildfire in Colorado history.

Cost = $2 Billion

Duration = 2 Days

Burned = 6,026 acres

Buildings Destroyed = 1,084

Deaths = 2

People Evacuated = 35,000

This wildfire was the first of its kind. Legislation has since come forth aimed at addressing the underinsured.

Requirement for insurers to offer coverage to address, inflation, building code upgrades.

Only 8% of Marsal Fire victims had enough insurance to replace their homes.

One of my former students was called out to inspect a majority of these homes, and said the devastation was beyond compare.

Now, 92% of these homeowners have no home and have been forced to leave the area.

Winds = 150 mph

Deaths = over 100

Structures destroyed and damaged = 3,200

Insurance Claims = 520,000

Complaints regarding insurance claims during the first 7 months after the storm = 8,000

              Reasons = denials, underpayments, and policy cancellations

***Much of this could have been prevented if homeowners were better informed about their policies. The major problem in this case is the homeowners needed both hurricane and flood endorsements (FEMA) to be properly insured.
